*** NOTE: ALL INFORMATION IS ACCURATE AT DATE OF PUBLISHING ***

In a previous post, I covered the filters in Microsoft Clarity. You have a ton of them that can be used to filter the data when reviewing the Dashboard, Recordings and the Heatmaps. There is also a set of Advanced Filters which can be used on the Dashboard and the Recordings (not on the Heatmaps at this time). In this post we will walk through all of the Advanced filters that can be usedin Clarity.

To access them, click on the blue Filters button, then click on the Advanced tab on the top left. As filters are added, they will be displayed in a bar at the top prior to being confirmed. Once you’ve added all the filters, clicking on the Apply button will then filter the data.

User Info Filters

Browser

When searching for data and using the Browser filter, the advanced option provides the ability to either include or exclude data from specific browsers.

Operating System

When searching for data and using the Operating system filter, the advanced option provides the ability to either include or exclude data from specific operating systems.

Device

When searching for data and using the Device filter, the advanced option provides the ability to either include or exclude data from specific devices.

Path Filters

While the standard path filters will all include data added to any of the four filters in this section (entry URL, exit URL, visited URL & referring site), the Advanced path filters can do a lot more. For each path filter, you can use the following operators.

  • Is – Exactly matching the URL/keyword specified.
  • Is Not: Match without the specified URL/keyword
  • Includes – Contains the specified URL/ keyword
  • Excludes – Does not contain the specified URL/keyword

Session Filters

Sessions cover a period of time a user spent on your site from the Entrance to the Exit.

Duration

Using the advanced filter for duration allows you to specify the amount of time in minutes and seconds and look for sessions greater than, less than or equal to that amount of time.

Click Count

Using the advanced filter for click count allows you to specify the number of clicks during a session and look for sessions greater than, less than or equal to that number.

Page Count

Using the advanced filter for page count allows you to specify the number of pages viewed during a session and look for sessions greater than, less than or equal to that number.

Page Filters

Page filters allow you to filter the data based on specific interactions or variables that occurred on an individual page that was viewed.

Duration & Click Count

The advanced filter for the page duration means you can look for recordings that include page visits that were greater than, less than or equal to specified number of minutes and seconds. The page click count allows you to filter based on a number of clicks on a page, looking for recordings that had clicks greater than, less than or equal to the number you specify.

JavaScript & Image Errors

This filter is not available in the standard filters, but by using the Advanced options, we can filter to show recordings that include a javascript or image error, or that don’t include one of those errors.

Page Size & Screen Resolution

The advanced filtering for page info provides the ability to filter based on the page size and/or screen resolution, setting the width and height in pixels and comparing data that includes recordings greater than, less than or equal to those values.

Visible & Hidden Page

The visible page and hidden page filters give you the ability to see recordings where the amount of time the page was visible to the user is greater than, less than or equal to the minutes and seconds added to the filter. The same can be done to find recordings where a page was hidden from the user, meaning it was open but not at the forefront of the users screen.

Insight Filters

The insight filters are used to find recordings with rage clicks, dead clicks, excessive scrolling and quick backs. Using the advanced filter, you can search for recordings that either include or exclude these.

User Actions

The user actions section has several filters based on some of the ways a visitor can interact during their session.

Cursor Movements, Text & Resizing

These filters can be used to either include or exclude recordings where a user moved their mouse, entered or selected text, or resized the page.

Page Scroll Depth

Finally, the page scroll depth shows how far (percentage) the visitor scrolled down a page. With the advanced filters a percentage can be added and the data filtered if the scroll depth is greater than, less than or equal to the value set.

You can watch a video about all of the Advanced Filters here.

  1. I have really enjoyed your Microsoft Clarity series. I do not have the Advanced Filter in the filters tab for dashboard or recordings. Has it been replaced? It seems like a great option. Thank you. v

    1. Hi Vickie, thanks for your comment! They recently changed things around so the filters do look a little different and are now all combined down the left hand side. If you’ve not already seen them, I did a couple of posts about Clarity last week, including this one: https://meganvwalker.com/saving-filters-as-segments-in-microsoft-clarity/ – then I have another one coming out today (Tuesday 21st September) that looks at how you can use Google Analytics Segments for filtering your data too.
